Dr. Ildar Khannanov

Biography

Ildar Khannanov is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at the Peabody Institute, part of Johns Hopkins University. He earned his PhD in Music Theory from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2003, where he focused on the dissertation titled 'Russian Methodology in Music Theory Analysis'. His academic journey includes studying at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he completed his aspirantura and held supervision by renowned scholars such as Yuri Kholopov. Khannanov has a diverse background in music, beginning his education in piano, theory, and composition at the Ufa Specialized Music School, and he has also studied philosophy under Jacques Derrida at the University of California, Irvine from 1997 to 2001. Khannanov has been actively involved in various academic committees and editorial positions, contributing significantly to the field of music theory, particularly focusing on Russian music theory and analysis. His research interests encompass topics such as the philosophy of music, semiotics, and formal functions, and he has presented his work internationally at numerous conferences. His publications include critical analyses and insights into the works of composers like Sergei Rachmaninoff and publications in reputed journals. Khannanov’s expertise and contributions have made him a prominent figure in the music theory community.
