Biography

Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Electro and Microengineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) since January 2022. She previously served as a Postdoctoral scientist and Swiss National Science Foundation fellow in the group of Professor Federico Capasso at Harvard University. In her research, she focuses on Terahertz science, quantum metrology, and ultrafast nonlinear optics, striving to develop hybrid optical technologies for high-frequency wave interaction and integration. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (2010) and a Master's degree in Optics and Photonics (2013), both with distinctions. Throughout her academic career, she has been awarded various scholarships and prizes, including the Fresnel prize for applied research by the European Physical Society and several recognition awards for her PhD thesis. Benea-Chelmus is also actively engaged in teaching and mentoring PhD students, and she has developed courses that provide in-depth training in micro and nanofabrication methods, as well as integrated photonic components. Her contributions to academic communities extend to advocacy work within postdoctoral associations.
