Professor Dr. Ilias Diakonikolas

Biography

Ilias Diakonikolas is a professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is a member of the theory computing group and has a strong focus on machine learning and data science. His research is centered around understanding the trade-offs between statistical and computational efficiency, as well as robustness in statistical learning. Diakonikolas has contributed to various areas including high-dimensional robust statistics, foundations of deep learning, and nonparametric estimation. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, where he studied optimization problems across multiple objectives, earning his degree with distinction. His prior appointment at the University of Edinburgh as the Andrew Erna Viterbi Early Career Chair in Computer Science, and his role as a Simons Postdoctoral Fellow, highlight his esteemed research career. Diakonikolas has received several notable awards including the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award and the Sloan Fellowship, and his work has been funded by organizations like NSF, DARPA, and the European Commission.
