Biography

Prof. Ilja Arts is a Professor of Systems Biology and founding Scientific Director of the Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology (MaCSBio) at Maastricht University. He leads interdisciplinary research focused on integrating modeling biological data across empirical domains using data-driven and theory-driven analytical modeling approaches. His research interests include Systems Medicine, Computational Neuro-Genetics, and Systems Toxicology. Currently, Prof. Arts is working to elucidate the biological mechanisms that play a role in the development and prognosis of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. His work aims to generate novel biomarkers and new leads for prevention and treatment, improving risk stratification through a biology-based approach to personalized health in chronic diseases. He has extensive experience in integrating large, multi-dimensional data sets including genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome, clinical, and lifestyle data from deep-phenotyped cohorts with genome scale metabolic dynamic models and pathway network models. Prof. Arts has generated approximately 6 million euros in competitive funding as an applicant or co-applicant and is an experienced supervisor for PhD candidates. He has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles on various topics and developed and taught courses at the Bachelor, Master, and post-doctoral levels, including innovative topics in molecular epidemiology as part of standard curricula. Additionally, he serves on the Board of the Dutch Research Council (NWO-ENW) and as vice-chair of the Board of the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSc). He is also a member of the board of the Netherlands Bioinformatics & Systems Biology research school (BioSB) and serves on various scientific advisory committees including the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences (DTL) and the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE).
