Ilja Arts is a Professor of Systems Biology and the founding Scientific Director of the Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology (MaCSBio) at Maastricht University. His interdisciplinary research center focuses on integrating modeling of biological data across empirical domains through data-driven and theory-driven analytical modeling approaches. His current research aims to elucidate the biological mechanisms that play a significant role in the development and prognosis of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. By generating novel biomarkers and new leads for prevention and treatment, he contributes to improved risk stratification and enables a biology-based approach to personalized health in chronic diseases. Prof. Arts integrates large multi-dimensional data sets, including genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome, and clinical lifestyle data, into genome-scale metabolic dynamical models and pathway network models, using data-driven (machine learning) biology-based methodologies. He has successfully generated competitive funding as both an applicant and co-applicant, supervised numerous PhD candidates, and published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals on various topics. Furthermore, he has significant experience in developing, coordinating, and teaching courses at the Bachelor's, Master's, and post-doctoral levels, having pioneered innovative topics like molecular epidemiology as part of the standard curricula.
