Biography

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Ilya Vinkovetsky left the Soviet Union at the age of ten. He attended high school in Texas and university in New England. His career varied as he worked as an interpreter, translator, camp counselor, and outdoor educator. He trained in Russian North American history at the University of California, Berkeley, and joined Simon Fraser University in 2004 after teaching at the American University in Bulgaria. His research primarily focuses on culture, commerce, politics, and colonial practices of the nineteenth-century Russian Empire, with particular emphasis on Russian America, known today as Alaska, and its unique status as the empire's only overseas colony. Vinkovetsky's scholarly contributions include a significant book on Russian America and various articles examining the interplay of Russian and international influences, especially regarding British North America and the Ottoman Empire.
