Dr. Inanc Birol

Biography

Dr. Inanc Birol is a distinguished scientist at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre and a professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He holds a position in the Department of Medical Genetics and serves as an associate member of the Departments of Computer Science and Pathology Laboratory Medicine at UBC. Dr. Birol has previously held research faculty associate positions at Simon Fraser University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. His team has produced 140 publications focused on the practical applications of ecosystems, human biology, and medical genomics. In 2018, he was recognized as one of the top 1% cited scientists in the world by Clarivate Analytics. His research interests center on data analysis from modern sequencing instruments, encompassing genomes, transcriptomes, and model species. He directs the Bioinformatics Technology Lab, focusing on the development of bioinformatics tools for de novo sequence assembly and downstream data analysis. Additionally, he oversees a wet lab at the BC Centre for Disease Control where he studies antimicrobial resistance and creates novel strategies as alternatives to conventional antibiotics.
