Biography

Indra Levy received her Ph.D. in modern Japanese literature from Columbia University in 2001. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) in the Department of Comparative Literature at Stanford University. Her work has focused on modern Japanese literature, particularly the intersection of humor, translation, and performance from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. She has authored significant works, including 'Sirens Western Shore: Westernesque Femme Fatale' and 'Translation Modern Japan.' Dr. Levy has served as the Executive Director of the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies and has received the Irene Hirano Inouye Award for her contributions to Japanese studies. Her research interests encompass modern Japanese literature criticism, critical translation studies, gender and language, modern Japanese performance especially during the Meiji and Taishō eras, and the intellectual history of Japanese women.
