I’m Professor of Greek, specializing in Byzantine literature. I completed my PhD at the University of Gothenburg in 2001 and held a postdoctoral research position at Freie Universität Berlin from 2002 to 2004 before coming to Uppsala as an Assistant Professor. From 2006 to 2010, I was a Pro Futura Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study. Furthermore, I spent periods at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris in 2008-2009 and 2014, and served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Oslo from 2016 to 2017. I was the Director of the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul from 2019 to 2021. In spring 2024, I will be a visiting scholar at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington. Additionally, in 2024 I will serve on the judging panel for the literary Runciman Award. Currently, I am the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Languages with responsibility for research and doctoral studies for the period of 2023-2026. My overarching research interest concerns processes of literary adaptation and translation across languages. My work primarily focuses on Greek Byzantine literature, especially fiction, as well as historiography in forms of literature written in Greek, particularly during the twelfth century from a narratological perspective. In recent years, I have published translations from Swedish into English, French, and Greek. I am also interested in forms of storytelling and contemporary narratives in academia. From 2020 to 2024, I served as editor (with David Ricks) of Byzantine Modern Greek Studies (CUP) and currently edit Studia Byzantina Upsaliensia, serve as an associate editor for Brill’s Narratological Commentaries on Ancient Texts, and sit on the editorial boards of Ancient Narrative, Cultural Interactions in the Mediterranean, FABULAE, JOLCEL (Journal of Latin Cosmopolitanism in European Literatures), and the Scandinavian Journal of Byzantine Modern Greek Studies.
