Biography

Inger Leemans is a Full Professor of Cultural History at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Principal Investigator of the NL-Lab research group within the Humanities Cluster of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Her research focuses on early modern cultural history, the history of emotions and senses, cultural economy, and the interplay between knowledge and digital humanities. Leemans has published extensively on topics such as the history of pornography, the radical Enlightenment, cultural infrastructure, as well as financial history and stock market crises. Her textbook on eighteenth-century literature, co-authored with Gert-Jan Johannes, has been described as a masterpiece. Leemans has coordinated several significant projects, including the Odeuropa project on olfactory heritage and sensory mining, and has been involved in collaborative digital humanities ventures with prominent institutions. She is an active member of several academic boards, including the Royal Netherlands Society of Arts and Sciences and the American Historical Review, and provides consultancy for various educational and cultural heritage initiatives in the Netherlands.
