Biography

Inseung Kang is an Assistant Professor at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. His research program addresses the grand challenge of enhancing human mobility through the use of robotics, wearables, and artificial intelligence. He leads a diverse research portfolio that includes the design of mechatronic systems and the development of AI-based robot controllers. His team focuses on creating wearable assistive devices and robotic exoskeletons for individuals with motor impairments, such as those who have suffered a stroke. This multidisciplinary approach integrates mechatronic design, deep learning, control theory, gait biomechanics, motor control, and motor learning. Kang has received the NIH Trailblazer Award and was named one of MIT Technology Review's Innovators 35 in the Asia Pacific. His long-term goal is to develop next-generation wearable robotic systems that will have a transformative impact on human mobility, grounded in a deep understanding of human-machine systems. Prior to his position at Carnegie Mellon, he was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT.
