Professor Dr. Ioannis Athanasiadis

Biography

Ioannis N. Athanasiadis is a Professor and Chair in Artificial Intelligence at Wageningen University Research. His research aims to advance artificial intelligence to address global challenges related to food security and ecological agriculture. As a proponent of use-inspired fundamental research, he aspires to further the field of artificial intelligence to contribute to a sustainable and food-secure future. Leading a research team, students, and stakeholders, Ioannis develops AI systems tailored to help farmers and policymakers make informed decisions and manage risks by improving the understanding of complex system interactions and making data-driven discoveries. He is a co-principal investigator on major European and national grants related to AI and agriculture ecology. He co-leads the WUR research theme on data-driven discoveries in a changing climate and employs AI and data science to understand and respond to climate change impacts. Additionally, he leads the Agricultural Model Intercomparison Improvement Project (AgMIP), focusing on the interface between machine learning and agricultural modeling.
