Ioannis Karmpadakis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. He directs the Hydrodynamics Laboratory and conducts research in coastal engineering. His research focuses on the appropriate description of waves and wave-related processes, and their effects on engineering design applications. A significant portion of his work involves experimental simulations, field data analysis, and numerical modeling of random waves in coastal zones, including associated statistical methods. He has developed advanced statistical models to guide the industry in the design and reliability assessment of coastal and offshore structures. His ongoing research also includes optimizing marine renewable devices and enhancing coastal environmental protection. He is leading projects that focus on accurately representing waves and calculating extreme wave loads on coastal offshore structures, as well as studying the long-term evolution of coastal bathymetry. His teaching includes modules related to Coastal Engineering and Coastal Processes for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and he supervises a wide range of research projects that explore the complexities of hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes. Ioannis completed his PhD in wave statistics within the Fluid Mechanics Section at Imperial College London, and holds a Diploma in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
