Biography

Ioannis Yannas was a prominent researcher known for his pioneering contributions to the field of organ regeneration, particularly in relation to skin and peripheral nerves. Born in Athens, Greece, he graduated from Harvard College in 1957 with a degree in Chemistry. After earning an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT in 1959, he completed both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at Princeton University by 1966. His doctoral research focused on the viscoelastic properties and thermal transitions of gelatin and collagen. He joined MIT's faculty in 1966, where he held various prominent positions, including a full-time appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences Technology Program. Over his career, he developed the Dermis Regeneration Template (DRT), which has revolutionized skin regeneration treatments. His innovations facilitated the regenerative healing of severely injured tissues and the functional replacement of damaged organs. Yannas published extensively, receiving multiple accolades including membership in the National Academy of Medicine and Engineering, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2015. His work significantly advanced the fields of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, setting new standards for treating trauma and chronic wounds.
