Biography

Iona Millwood is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division. She co-leads the Genetic Epidemiology module for the MSc in Global Health Science and Epidemiology. Since joining the Clinical Trial Service Unit Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) in 2009, she has worked on the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), where she designs and conducts genomic multi-omic assays to enhance and develop CKB resources. Her current research interests focus on utilizing genetic molecular epidemiology to understand the etiology of cardio-metabolic chronic diseases, identifying and evaluating potential drug targets, and investigating the role of infections in cancer risk and the health effects of alcohol consumption. Iona completed her undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and obtained a DPhil in Molecular Genetics from the University of Oxford. She has also worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Imperial College London, involved in large-scale genetic epidemiological projects with the Northern Finland Birth Cohorts. Additionally, Iona spent years as a lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Australia, where she developed and conducted clinical trials for biomedical methods in HIV prevention across Australia and Southeast Asia.
