Biography

After obtaining his Master's degree from Moscow State University in 1995, Professor Polterovich received his Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute in 2000. He spent time as a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre de recherches mathématiques, MSRI, and the Max Planck Institute, before accepting a position as an assistant professor at the University of Montreal in 2002. Professor Polterovich works in spectral geometry theory and has achieved a significant number of results recognized for their importance and novelty. Perhaps the most exciting, announced in 2000, is the discovery of an 'explicit' formula for the heat invariants of a Riemannian manifold. Despite being the subject of 50 years of research, Polterovich managed to present them in a striking manner that will surely be essential to his later research as well as that of his colleagues.
