Professor Dr. Ira Deveson

Biography

Ira Deveson graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy from the Australian National University in 2012. He completed his PhD at the Garvan Institute from 2014 to 2017, under the supervision of Professors John Mattick and Tim Mercer. His doctoral research focused on genome and transcriptome bioinformatics, earning him the JD Catcheside Prize from the Genomics Society of Australasia. In 2018, Ira was awarded the Early Career Fellowship from the Cancer Institute NSW, followed by the prestigious Investigator Grant (Emerging Leadership Level 2) from the NHMRC Medical Research Futures Fund in 2020. Currently, he is the Head of the Genomic Technologies Group at the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics. Under his leadership, the group is exploring the development of cutting-edge molecular and computational tools for advancing research in clinical genomics, particularly in response to emerging genomic technologies in the context of cancer. His research interests include viral and pathogen genomics, gene regulation, alternative splicing, and bioinformatics in various biomedical applications.
