Biography

Ira Harkavy is the Founding Director and Associate Vice President of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. Since 1992, Harkavy has been instrumental in developing academically based community service courses and participatory action research projects, fostering university-community partnerships particularly with West Philadelphia's local community. He teaches courses in history, urban studies, and Africana studies at the Graduate School of Education. Harkavy has extensively written and lectured on urban university-community-school partnerships and the civic missions of higher education. He has authored or edited ten books, including works that explore the intersection of higher education and social change. Harkavy has held significant roles in various academic and civic initiatives, receiving numerous awards for his contributions to service learning and community engagement. His leadership has led the Netter Center to be recognized with national awards for its community service initiatives.
