Biography

Irena Rosenthal is an Assistant Professor of legal philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen. Her current research focuses on the normative legal dimension of unpaid care in liberal democracies, which reflects her interdisciplinary approach that combines political and legal philosophy with sociology. Prior to joining Radboud University, Irena worked at the PPLE College in the Department of Jurisprudence of the University of Amsterdam. She obtained her PhD from VU University Amsterdam in 2012, where she was awarded the European Award in Legal Theory for her dissertation, which examined the ontological dimensions of democratic justice through the lens of Foucault's psychoanalysis to critique political liberalism. As a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University, she expanded her research on democratic resilience and the role of emotions in liberal democracies. Irena graduated cum laude in philosophy and law from both the University of Amsterdam and New York University School of Law. Her early career included an internship at the South Asian Human Rights Documentation Center in New Delhi, India, which informs her ongoing research interests in social justice, care, democracy, citizenship, and human rights.
