Dr. Irena Tocino

Biography

Irena Tocino, MD, is a radiologist specializing in radiology and biomedical imaging, with a focus on breast and thoracic imaging. She provides diagnostic and interventional procedures, utilizing breast imaging techniques and lung cancer screening. As a professor emeritus of radiology and biomedical imaging at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Tocino has pioneered efforts in imaging data informatics, implementing AI algorithms into clinical decision support systems to enhance radiology workflows. Her research aims to integrate technology within medical imaging to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient access to information. Dr. Tocino completed her medical training at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, and further specialized in thoracic imaging during her fellowship at Cincinnati General Hospital. Throughout her career, she has significantly contributed to the fields of imaging informatics and breast cancer advocacy, particularly as the founder and chairwoman of the Utah Breast Cancer Task Force, promoting initiatives for breast cancer screening and legislative measures for quality standards in mammography. She also served as Chief of Breast Imaging at Yale, introducing innovative diagnostic procedures such as stereotactic breast biopsy.
