Biography

Irene Bloemraad is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University and has a strong academic background with a Master's and Bachelor's degree from McGill University. Bloemraad's research focuses on immigrant civic incorporation, migration politics, and the implications of immigrant presence in Western liberal democracies. Her work critically examines the acquisition of formal citizenship and the socio-political transformation of national identities influenced by migration. She engages in the discourse on community-based organizations and their roles in advancing political voice and providing services for immigrants. Before joining UBC in 2024 as the inaugural President’s Excellence Chair in Global Migration, she held the 1951 Chair in Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was also the founder of the Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative. Bloemraad is the co-director of the Centre for Migration Studies at UBC and has held visiting appointments in prestigious institutions including Trinity College in Ireland and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
