Irene Caminschi's laboratory investigates the role of dendritic cells in immunity, with the intent of applying knowledge from this research to the design of immunotherapies. She received her PhD from the University of Western Australia, where she investigated the role of IL-12 in evoking anti-tumor immunity. Her interest in harnessing the immune system to combat disease led to post-doctoral studies on dendritic cells in the laboratory of Prof. Shortman at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Her research has focused on the heterogeneous nature of dendritic cells and their role in orchestrating the adaptive immune response. Through the analysis of dendritic cell subsets and the screening of differentially expressed genes, she has contributed to the discovery of novel genes and molecules that allow for the dissection of unique immune functions in dendritic cell subpopulations, providing targets for immunotherapy. In 2012, she established her own laboratory and continues her research in dendritic cell biology with the aim of understanding the molecules that govern the specialized functions of these cells to pave the way for novel immunotherapies.
