Dr. Irene Gammel

Biography

Irene Gammel is a Professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University with a focus on modern literature and visual culture. She has held several prominent positions in academia, serving as the Director of the Modern Literature Culture Research Centre since 2005. Gammel is recognized for her scholarship that intersects gender studies and modernism. She has authored and edited fourteen books, including influential works such as 'Baroness Elsa: Gender, Dada Everyday Modernity' and 'Looking Anne Green Gables'. In addition to her books, she has published over fifty peer-reviewed articles and chapters, contributing significantly to the field of L.M. Montgomery Studies and the broader narratives surrounding women's confessional discourses. Gammel's research has been pivotal in uncovering the roots of modern feminist performance art. She has also been actively involved in various editorial boards, including 'Avant-Garde Studies' and 'Fashion Studies'. Under her directorship, the Modern Literature Culture Research Centre has hosted numerous exhibitions and workshops aimed at advancing experimental methods in training students.
