Biography

Dr. Irene H. Maumenee has a lifelong interest in genetic eye diseases. She graduated from the University of Goettingen, Germany, and joined the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where she wrote her thesis on X-linked retinitis pigmentosa. She later moved to the University of Hawaii, exploring population genetics, and initiated a long-term analysis of achromatopsia in Pingelap, a small island in the Federated States of Micronesia, which resulted in the identification of the gene for colorblindness, CNGB3. In 1969, she joined the Department of Medical Genetics at Johns Hopkins University, founded by Dr. Victor McKusick, focusing on connective tissue disorders such as Marfan Syndrome. After a 40-year tenure there, she became part of the Faculty at Columbia University Medical Center, continuing her genetic studies. Dr. Maumenee has held several leadership positions in prestigious societies, including founding the Ophthalmic Genetics Study Club and serving as president of various international congresses on genetic eye diseases. She has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Laureate Recognition Award.
