Biography

Irene Monasterolo is a Full Professor at Utrecht University’s School of Economics, focusing on Climate Finance. Her research examines the impact of climate risks on fiscal and financial stability, exploring the role of the financial system in climate mitigation and adaptation through policies, markets, and financial instruments. Irene co-developed a climate stress test for the financial system and introduced a framework to translate climate scenarios into adjustments of financial valuation and risk metrics for investors, addressing network effects. She also co-developed the EIRIN Stock-Flow Consistent macro-financial model to analyze the impacts of both climate physical and transition risks, as well as green policies in the low-carbon transition. Irene's work has been published in leading journals such as Science and Nature Climate Change. Additionally, she has collaborated with prominent financial institutions including the World Bank, the European Central Bank, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore on climate financial risk assessments. Currently, she is involved with the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) to develop short-term climate scenarios and is a research fellow affiliated with CPER's European Finance Architecture Research Policy Network.
