Biography

Irene Papanicolas is an Associate Professor in Health Economics at the London School of Economics. Her research and teaching focus on the performance assessment of health systems. Irene's work examines existing approaches used to measure and incentivize performance in health services and the methodologies utilized for international comparisons and benchmarking. She presented aspects of her work at the 2018 TEDMED conference and has published on topics related to Health Policy and Health Economics in leading medical journals. Irene has also contributed numerous book chapters and edited volumes on the measurement and performance assessment of health systems, published by reputable publishers including Cambridge University Press and the Open University Press. Irene is a principal co-investigator on research projects exploring international comparisons of Health Systems, funded by the Commonwealth Fund and Health Foundation. She is currently a co-investigator on the International Collaboration Costs, Outcomes, and Needs in Care (ICCONIC) Collaborative, which aims to understand patterns of health service utilization among high-need, high-cost patients. Additionally, Irene serves as a Visiting Scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she has been a part of various advisory roles, including Associate Editor for the Journal of Health Policy.
