Dr. Irene Pieper

Biography

Irene Pieper is a Professor of the Didactics of German Literature at Freie Universität Berlin. She has an extensive academic background in German Studies, Evangelical Theology, and English Studies, having completed her education at various prestigious institutions including the University of Edinburgh and Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Since April 2020, she has been contributing significantly to literary education and research, focusing on literary competence and its acquisition, metaphor comprehension, and the constitution of subject matter in German instruction. Pieper has held multiple academic positions, including as a scientific assistant and professor in literature at various German universities, and has been actively involved in several educational projects aimed at enhancing the standards of literature education in secondary schools. Apart from her administrative roles, she is a prominent member of various editorial boards and research associations. Her research interests include reading education and literacy, interdisciplinary studies in literature didactics, and the integration of new methodologies in teaching literature, particularly the application of digital resources in the classroom.
