Biography

Irene Selwaness is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University in Egypt and a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics. With a Master's degree in Quantitative Economics and a PhD in Labour Economics from Université Paris 1 – Panthéon Sorbonne, her research focuses on economic development, specifically in the areas of social protection, social policy, labour market analysis, and gender issues. Irene is currently involved in projects aimed at expanding social insurance coverage and analyzing employment regulations and gender in labour markets, particularly in the Middle East. Her work has been published in several notable journals including PLOS, Feminist Economics, and the International Social Security Review. She has also consulted for various organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Bank, and UN Women. Irene is fluent in Arabic and French and has extensive expertise in social policy and the labour market in Egypt.
