Biography

Iris completed her studies in Education, Sign Language, and Business at the University of Hamburg in Germany before migrating to Western Australia. She furthered her education by obtaining a PhD in German Studies and Language Learning from the University of Western Australia (UWA), focusing on the use of online role-plays as a method for language acquisition. In addition to teaching German at UWA for decades, she has instructed students at various proficiency levels in educational settings across Western Australia. As an accredited examiner for the Goethe-Institut, Iris oversees the Institut's language examinations in the region. She strongly supports the significance of foreign language learning as a foundation for multicultural exchange and mutual understanding, and is passionate about facilitating student learning and well-being. In 2024, she was awarded the Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning Award for her efforts. Her research interests include language education, innovations in the field, and the history of German-speaking migrants in Western Australia. Moreover, Iris is a key stakeholder in the German-speaking community, connected with language and cultural clubs, businesses, and teacher associations, and has held multiple committee positions, including chairing the Goethe Society of WA for several years.
