Iris Nandhakumar received a first-class Dipl.-Chem. degree (MSc Chemistry) from the Technical University of Berlin and gained her PhD in Chemistry at the University of Southampton. She holds an MPhil in Physics from the University of Cambridge, Cavendish Laboratory. Nandhakumar has held post-doctoral appointments at the University of Southampton, and visiting research fellow positions at the University of Georgia in Athens and the University of California in the USA. She was appointed to a joint faculty position at the University of Southampton in both Physics and Chemistry. Her research focuses on nanoscale fabrication and characterization of materials, particularly semiconducting materials. Nandhakumar has given numerous invited talks and seminars at leading international conferences, including MRS and ACS meetings, as well as Gordon research conferences. With over 60 peer-reviewed journal publications, she is widely cited (h-index 21) in prestigious journals such as Small, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, and Physical Review Letters. Her work represents significant advances in the fabrication, characterization, and understanding of nanoscale materials at the physics-chemistry boundary, and she has obtained significant research funding from a variety of bodies, totaling more than £5 million. Nandhakumar is the lead principal investigator on an EPSRC project focused on “Flexible Thermoelectric Hybrid Materials” jointly with the University of Oxford, and she is the main editor of a recent RSC book entitled Thermoelectric Materials and Devices published in 2017.
