Biography

Iris Sportel is an associate professor in Sociology Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, specializing in Migration Law. She holds a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen, which she obtained in 2014 after completing her dissertation on the interdisciplinary study of divorce among transnational Dutch-Moroccan and Dutch-Egyptian families. Her research focuses on how individual actors, including families and legal professionals, navigate and experience law and legal institutions. She has particular interest in the state regulation of intimate relationships, migration, gender, and minorities. Between 2015 and 2017, Sportel was a fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Göttingen, Germany. In 2017, she received an NWO Veni grant for her research project that examines the role of religion, culture, and ethnicity in court procedures involving children from minority families, a project that ran from 2017 to 2021. Sportel has also participated in various policy research projects related to migration, child protection, and legal institutions.
