Biography

Irwin Suffet is a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at UCLA, specifically involved in the Environmental Science Engineering Program housed within the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from Brooklyn College (1961), an M.S. in chemistry from the University of Maryland (1964), and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science Chemistry from Rutgers University (1968). Since joining UCLA in 1991, Suffet has contributed significantly to the field, with over 225 published research papers and eight co-edited research treatises. He previously held the position of P.W. Purdom Professor of Environmental Chemistry at Drexel University's Department of Chemistry and the Environmental Studies Institute. Notably, he received the F.J. Zimmerman Environmental Science Award from the American Chemical Society in 1983 and the P. Black Award for lifetime achievement in drinking water quality research from the American Water Works Association in 2001.
