Isa Kolo is a Research Associate in the Systems Power & Energy group at the University of Glasgow. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from the International Islamic University Malaysia and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Masdar Institute (now Khalifa University) in Abu Dhabi. He began his research career as a Research Assistant exploring robust numerical techniques and computational tools for predicting the behavior and failure of materials and structures. Isa continued his studies at the University of Sheffield, where he developed an adaptive isogeometric finite element framework for gradient elasticity and gradient plasticity, culminating in his PhD. His research has wide-ranging applications in the design of sustainable buildings and the efficient extraction of the Earth’s resources; for instance, he modeled fold-induced rock fractures and investigated advanced concepts for managing losses in conventional geothermal systems. After his PhD, he participated in a joint project with Eindhoven University of Technology and Shell International BV, aimed at developing a coupled multi-physics hydraulic fracture simulator for carbon capture and storage. Since joining the University of Glasgow in July 2021, Isa has been working on two EPSRC net-zero projects: NetZeroGeoRDIE, which focuses on repurposing the Newcastle Helix Borehole into a deep coaxial borehole heat exchanger, and INTEGRATE, which is centered on underground thermal energy storage in the UK.
