Biography

Isaac Blacksin is an Assistant Professor of Critical Media Studies in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University. He focuses on media theory and ethnographic research in contexts of military conflict. His work critically examines the intersection of politics, representation, and mass media practices, particularly in relation to violence. His book, 'Conflicted: Making News Global War,' published by Stanford University Press in 2024, explores the role of news in conflict and challenges the presumed functions of media in justifying violence. Through extensive ethnographic fieldwork in war zones including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, his research has been supported by leading foundations and has appeared in both scholarly and popular media outlets, such as Public Culture and Media, War & Conflict. In addition to his academic role, Blacksin has served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Southern California and a Research Fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication. He holds a Ph.D. in History of Consciousness from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an M.A. in Religious Studies from Stanford University.
