Dr. Isaac Lipkus

Biography

Isaac Marcelo Lipkus is a Professor at the School of Nursing at Duke University, where he has been on faculty since 2009. He also holds professorships in Family Medicine Community Health and Psychiatry Behavioral Sciences. His research primarily focuses on risk perceptions and various attitudinal and dispositional variables that affect lifestyle behaviors related to cancer prevention and detection, tobacco use, and physical activity. He has been affiliated with the Duke Cancer Institute since 1995. His work integrates behavioral science into understanding the psychosocial aspects of health behaviors. Notably, his research has examined the interplay between perceived stress, anxiety, and depression in relation to tobacco smoking among young adults, revealing significant insights into behavioral susceptibilities. Additionally, he explores the genetic factors influencing lung cancer risk and the impact of perceived healthcare discrimination in African American communities. Lipkus has been awarded multiple grants for his research initiatives aimed at promoting healthier behaviors and understanding the sociocultural factors affecting health outcomes.
