Dr. Isaac Martin

Biography

Isaac William Martin is the Jeri-Ann Gary E. Jacobs Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego. He has served as the founding Chair of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning from 2019 to 2025. He has received multiple teaching awards for his mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students. Martin is the author of several impactful books and articles focusing on topics such as housing policy, municipal taxation, and political economy. His notable works include 'Foreclosed America' (Stanford, 2015), 'Rich People’s Movements' (Oxford, 2013), and 'Permanent Tax Revolt' (Stanford, 2008). He has also edited significant volumes in the field, including the 'New Handbook of Political Sociology' (Cambridge, 2020). His research has been featured in prominent media outlets such as NPR, The New Yorker, and The Washington Post. Martin's contributions have been recognized by the American Sociological Association, Pacific Sociological Association, and Social Science History Association, where he has held various leadership roles.
