Biography

Isabel Campbell is an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University. She is a historian with extensive experience in researching and writing about Canadian military history. Campbell has educated at Memorial, Western, Carleton, and Laval universities and has authored works such as 'Unlikely Diplomats: Canadian Brigade in Germany, 1951-1964.' She has also co-authored two volumes of the official histories of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Her current research involves contributions related to Inuit guides in Canada’s North and early Cold War allied intelligence concerning Canada’s defense planning and nuclear policies. Additionally, Campbell is editing a volume on the Canadian Cold War security state, which includes a piece written from the perspective of the son of a residential school survivor who became a Cold War military soldier. She is passionate about innovative methods for accessing archives and has utilized oral history methodology to study Canadian Cold War military families. Her ongoing projects analyze gender roles, the development of 'fictive' kinships among military families, and perceptions of cultural, racial, and linguistic 'othering' in these communities. Campbell is open to collaborations and co-supervision requests from graduate students and looks forward to working closely with historians and students at Carleton.
