Biography

Isabella Huberman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her academic focus is on Indigenous literature and cinema in Quebec. She completed her PhD at the University of Toronto in 2019, as well as an MA in 2012. Isabella was awarded the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Manitoba and another at the University of Toronto. Her notable work includes the book 'Histoires souveraines: poétiques du personnel dans les littératures autochtones au Québec', which won the Prix Gabrielle-Roy in 2024 and was a finalist for the Prix Victor-Barbeau the same year. Her research addresses themes of Indigenous sovereignty and narratives within Québec- Indigenous studies, with recent publications focusing on colonial methodologies and hydro development. Isabella is involved in editing special issues on Indigenous literature, exploring questions of race and colonialism. Her ongoing projects include examining Indigenous film and literature related to hydro power in Manitoba and Quebec, and a zine-making initiative to explore extractivism.
