Biography

Isabelle Peretz is a cognitive neuropsychologist and a distinguished professor at the University of Montreal. Born and educated in Brussels, Belgium, she earned her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1984. With a dedicated career at the University of Montreal, her research is internationally recognized, specifically focusing on the study of musical abilities and disorders, including congenital amusia. Over her career, Peretz has published more than 175 scientific papers across multiple facets of music perception, memory, and emotion while contributing to the understanding of the neural underpinnings of musical cognition. In 2004, she received the Casavant Chair in Neurocognition of Music and became a Canada Research Chair in 2006. Her influential work includes leading the International Laboratory for Brain, Music, and Sound Research (BRAMS) since its inception in 2005, which is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to the exploration of the relations between music and the brain. She has received multiple awards for excellence in research and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Psychological Association.
