Dr. Iulia Lefter

Biography

Iulia Lefter is an Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology. Her research focuses on affective computing within artificial intelligence, particularly on how machines can perceive and respond to human emotions and affect-related behaviors. She devotes her work to designing and developing Affect-Sensitive Systems, aiming to create technologies that are aware of and capable of adapting to human affect, thereby supporting users in achieving their goals. Areas of application include mental, social, and physical well-being, human-media interaction, education, and enhancing human-human interactions, particularly in the context of specific tasks such as negotiations and serious games. Iulia employs models that automatically sense the affective states of users by analyzing data cues, including verbal and non-verbal behavior as well as bio-signals, and investigates how these signals can be interpreted meaningfully through multimodal fusion. Furthermore, she explores design opportunities in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure meaningful interactions between users and systems. This means creating systems that truly support users in reaching their objectives in a useful and acceptable manner.
