Biography

Iulia Skoda is a PhD student at Linköping University, affiliated with the Medical Faculty. Her research focuses on Atrial Fibrillation (AF), a common arrhythmia that significantly impacts patients and healthcare systems worldwide. AF is associated with unpleasant symptoms and high risks for stroke, mortality, and hospitalization due to heart failure. Current research highlights the roles of epicardial adipose tissue, fibrosis, inflammation, and altered blood flow in the progression of AF, creating a knowledge gap that Iulia aims to address. Her overall goal is to deepen the understanding of the presence of intramural fibrosis and epicardial adipose tissue within the atrial wall, as well as the parameters that correlate to inflammation and AF progression. Additionally, she seeks to analyze the blood flow patterns in AF patients in relation to hypercoagulability, inflammation, fat, and fibrosis by utilizing tools such as blood samples for assessing inflammation and coagulation, as well as advanced imaging techniques like cardiac CT and cardiac MRI for measuring atrial volume and flow.
