Biography

Ivan Evans received a B.A. (Honours) from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, an M.Sc., and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught at the University of the Western Cape and UCLA before joining the Department of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His publications include significant works examining both bureaucratic practices and racial violence in historical contexts, notably 'Bureaucracy and Race: Native Administration in South Africa' published in 1997 and 'Cultures of Violence: Lynching, Racial Killing in South Africa and the American South' released in 2008. His teaching focuses on modern social change in South Africa, political sociology, race and ethnicity, violence in society, social movements, and environmental sociology. Currently, his research interests center around the politics of global climate change and water management in Southern Africa, emphasizing the cultural implications of violence and segregation in both South Africa and the American South.
