Biography

Ivan Haigh is an Associate Professor in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, UK. He has a BSc in Oceanography and Mathematics from the University of Southampton and a PhD focused on changes in mean extreme sea levels in the English Channel. Following his PhD, he completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Western Australia before returning to the University of Southampton as a lecturer and later being promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. His research interests include compound flooding, coastal flooding risks, and sea-level rise. He leads and is involved in various national and international research projects funded by multiple agencies, totaling millions of pounds. He is particularly focused on understanding and predicting mechanisms driving compound flood events in coastal areas and has a strong interest in climate change impacts on storm surge barriers. Additionally, he is passionate about delivering engaging and interactive teaching at the undergraduate and MSc levels, having received consistently high feedback from students. Outside of teaching and research, he has presented as a keynote speaker at several conferences and contributes to various external roles.
