Biography

Ivan Soltesz received his Ph.D. from Eotvos University in Budapest, focusing on Comparative Physiology. He has conducted postdoctoral research at prestigious institutions including Oxford University, Stanford University, and others. In 1995, he established his laboratory at the University of California, Irvine, where he became a full Professor in 2003, served as the department Chair from 2006 until July 2015, and returned to Stanford in 2015 as the James R. His major research interests include neuronal microcircuits, network oscillations, and cannabinoid signaling, with a focus on the mechanistic bases of circuit dysfunction in epilepsy. His laboratory employs a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques, using methods such as closed-loop in vivo optogenetics and advanced 3D video analysis aided by machine learning. Over his career spanning 30 years, he has trained 16 graduate students and 20 postdoctoral fellows. He has authored and edited books on neurobiology and has received several prestigious awards in neuroscience research.
