Biography

Ivan Tan is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Music at Brown University, specializing in music theory and applied musicianship. He teaches a variety of courses, including popular music songwriting and advanced musicianship. His research interests focus on the textural roles and interactions in small ensemble music, as well as the analysis of rhythm and meter in popular music. Additionally, Tan explores creativity in cover songs and their rearrangements. His research has been published in Music Perception and Psychology of Music and has been presented at annual meetings of the Society for Music Theory and the American Musicological Society. Tan completed his Ph.D. in music theory at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, and holds degrees from Brown University and SUNY Purchase. Alongside his teaching responsibilities, he maintains an active performing career as a pianist and keyboardist.
