Biography

Iwan de Esch is a professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Drug Design and Synthesis. He studied Organic Chemistry at Radboud University Nijmegen and completed his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, focusing on pharmacochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Timmerman. Following his graduation, he conducted post-doctoral research in the Drug Design Group at the University of Cambridge. De Esch co-founded De Novo Pharmaceuticals in 2000 and has established a successful research line in fragment-based drug design. He has also been a co-founder of both IOTA Pharmaceuticals and Griffin Discoveries, contributing significantly to the biotech industry. In 2011, he was awarded the Galenus Research Prize for his contributions to fragment-based drug discovery. His research aims to understand and predict interactions between biologically active substances, molecular targets, receptors, and enzymes, utilizing Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) and structural biology insights. De Esch is also involved in valorization research and has a role in the educational programs related to Pharmaceutical Sciences at the university.
