Izan completed Bachelor of Economics degree with first class honours at Monash University and completed her MBA and PhD degrees at the Graduate School of Business (now named Chicago Booth), University of Chicago. She had an academic appointment as a lecturer at the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of New South Wales before joining the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1981. She became a Professor in 1990, specializing in accounting and finance, and served as Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance from 1994 to 1999. Over her career, she held various leadership positions at UWA, including Deputy Dean of the UWA Business School, and played a critical role in obtaining international accreditation for the school.
