Biography

Izzy Thompson is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in interdisciplinary research on healthy ageing. She focuses on the development and evaluation of novel home-based technologies aimed at supporting the strength and wellbeing of older adults. Izzy’s technical role also includes providing support to staff and students within Health Sciences laboratories across university campuses and Southampton General Hospital. She completed her PhD at the University of Southampton, during which she worked with British Swimming and the UK Sports Institute to explore interventions that improve underwater fly kick performance. Izzy held a Research Fellowship at the Performance Sports Engineering Laboratory, where she supported the development of freestyle swimming techniques. Despite moving away from direct involvement in sports research, she continues to maintain a strong interest in the field and engages in ongoing research efforts. Additionally, she has contributed to various consultancy projects with National Governing Bodies associated with the UK Sports Institute and industrial partners such as Speedo and Essity. Her work encompasses both sports and health science applications, providing practical insights grounded in biomechanical expertise that have real-world impact.
