Biography

Alex Birdwell is immensely passionate about teaching and covers an array of courses within the mechanical engineering department at the Segal Design Institute. His current courses focus on user-centered design and provide a capstone experience for mechanical engineering students, promoting anti-racism through Art Making. Alex strives to engage students with real-world applications and fosters open dialogue discussions in class through unique demonstrations created from everyday objects. His teaching methods bridge the gap between students' existing knowledge and new concepts, challenging them to expand their mindsets. As an academic advisor, he works with students in the Manufacturing and Design Engineering (MaDE) program and has previously served as an advisor for first-year mechanical engineering students, focusing on helping them define educational objectives and become self-sufficient individuals. Alex also serves as the co-director of Design Thinking Communication (DTC) and is actively involved with the NU Robotics Club. His research interests include robotics, biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, education, and digital learning technologies, marking his contribution to both academic and student communities.
