Biography

J. Martin Bollinger Jr. is a Russell Mildred Marker Professor at Penn State University, focusing on the study of metalloenzymes and biochemical mechanisms involving complex metal clusters. His research encompasses bioinorganic chemistry, probing the roles of metalloenzymes in processes such as nitrogen fixation, photosynthesis, and oxidative phosphorylation. He works to understand how proteins coordinate metal ions and ligands to define their catalytic functions. His current research focuses on the structure-reactivity relationships of a class of enzymes utilizing dinuclear iron clusters to activate molecular oxygen, facilitating diverse oxidation reactions. He employs an array of biophysical techniques and rapid kinetic methods to investigate the dynamics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions. Additionally, he's engaging in interdisciplinary projects to elucidate the assembly and disassembly of iron-sulfur clusters and their regulatory roles in biological systems.
